#20986: Amish/Mennonite Quilt Series: Women of the BibleFor this quilt project we will gather at the lovely and peaceful surroundings of Amigo Centre in the heart of Amish Country near Sturgis, Michigan. The large windows of our sewing room offer inspiring views of tranquil Perrin Lake with its swans and Sand Hill Cranes, of stately trees, song birds and small woodland creatures surrounding the camp. Early risers will enjoy beautiful sunrises, and hikers will have opportunities to investigate the surrounding nature trails.
Our week-long quilt project will be the Women of the Bible Quilt (from Patterns of Faith), led by the quilt’s designer, Carol Honderich. The 53-block sampler quilt was inspired by Ann Spangler and Jean Syswerda’s devotional book, Women of the Bible. The 6” quilt blocks use a variety of techniques and combinations of techniques, making the project an interesting one, while also offering the opportunity to engage these stories of the women of the Bible. Quilters who have made this quilt often comment on the improvement of their quilting skills and confidence as a quilter as a result of this project. The classes will focus primarily on the first nine blocks of the quilt, representing the women of Genesis. The project is appropriate for any skill-level. Beginning quilters are welcome! Experienced quilters will also find tips and techniques that will improve their quilting-making skills. Carol and her assistant, Marie Troyer, work with each participant as needed to complete the blocks. Our teaching style is an easy-going, open classroom, where each participant contributes to the teaching process. An outing to the quilt shops of nearby Shipshewana, Indiana, plus great meals from Amigo’s kitchen, large comfortable sleeping rooms, and the wonderful hospitality of Amigo Centre’s staff create of a relaxed atmosphere and encourages a delightful spirit of comradery for the group throughout the week. |
InstructorCarol Honderich
Goshen, Indiana, is a quilt maker, designer, presenter and instructor whose quilts has been exhibited in galleries and shows around the country including AQS Paducah Quilt Show, Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, Sauder Village Quilt Festival and many local exhibits. Carol leads Amigo Centre’s annual Spiritual Quilt Retreat and offers private instruction for individuals, quilt retreats, and presentations for groups. She learned quilting making at an early age, sitting with her mother, grandmothers, aunts and cousins around the quilting frame at family quilting bees. She traces this craft back in her family for four generations with quilts from her great-grandmother, grandmother and mother. Carol has a passion for making faith-based quilts and loves the opportunity to challenge and encourage her students to create well-made, beautiful and meaningful quilts that tell a story about the quilter.
