Creating Stories of Hope:  Finding Healing in the Male Journey

Within our individual and collective stories there is a unity that touches all of creation. As we walk this earth, we carry those stories in our hearts, souls and bodies. The wisdom of our stories are as important as time and stretch into eternity.

Our retreat will explore the ways that our interpretations of life events impact the stories we create. Individually, in small groups, and in larger groups, we will hear ancient stories and emerging stories. As our stories are told, we will contemplate questions common to the male journey.
  •  Mentors: Who are your mentors, past and present, and how do those relationships impact your life?
  • Wounding and Adversity:  How have you been wounded?  How do you grieve the losses related to your wounding?  How has your wounding impacted your sense of calling and mission?
  • Blessing and Initiation: When, how and by whom are you blessed in your male journey?
  • Calling and Mission: How do you bring great love and beauty to those you serve?

We are called to be Jesus’ welcoming embrace as we seek God’s call for us. In the beauty and resilience of the Amigo woodlands and waterways, we invite you to find purpose and meaning in your story. Whether your story is whole or in pieces, coherent or rambling, we say welcome. Join James, Leon, and fellow participants as the “God Within” is revealed in our personal and collective stories. When we say welcome that means you!

James M. Yoder LCSW, LMSW, ACSW

James  is a retired clinical social worker whose life work is listening to and refining the stories of
exceptional resilience among marginalized populations and traumatized children.  He finds purpose
and hope working as an alchemist, one who is on a journey seeking to transform the raw materials
of life into gold.   A recurrent question in his journey is, “How can life experiences that evoke feelings
of fear, rage, and sadness become lifegiving energy?”  It is a journey that involves mystery, grace
     and paradox.

Leon Bauman

Leon is a retired elementary school teacher and school counselor whose life work has been
mentoring young people, planting seeds of hope and possibility. A recurrent question in his
journey is, “How can painful experiences be transformed and reframed?”
