History of the O/EE Program

Started in 1971 to provide students an opportunity for experiential learning
  • York Elementary School (Bristol, IN) was the first school to participate in the program
  • In 1999, a six-session Nature Study Course for Homeschoolers was started. In 2013, we expanded the program to a Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning group.  In 2014, we added a 7th monthly session.
The Outdoor / Environmental Education Program at Amigo Centre presently serves between 1,500 to 2,000 students annually from public and private schools in northern Indiana and southern Michigan.

Back in 1971, York Elementary Principal Dale Stutzman had a vision. He wanted to create a program where school children could enjoy the beauty of Amigo, while learning about the wonders of the natural world.  Together with sixth grade teacher Dan Hochstetler, they began to brainstorm - the seeds of the present day O/EE program taking root in their conversations and actions.  We are grateful to Dale & Dan for their vision!
